Michigan State University takes on Oakland University as men’s college basketball returns to The Palace of Auburn Hills on Dec. 14 at 4 p.m.

Joining the Horizon League this season, the Oakland University Men’s Basketball team finished the regular season 16-15 and earned the No. 4 seed at The Summit League tournament after going 10-6 in league play. The Golden Grizzlies competed in their fifth consecutive NCAA postseason, falling in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason tournament.
Entering his 30th season as head coach, Greg Kampe has led the Golden Grizzlies to five consecutive postseason appearances and three NCAA tournaments (2005, 2010, 2011). In 2012-13, Kampe became the fifth Division I active coach to win 500 games at one school and is No. 21 among active D-I coaches for victories. He has led OU to six Summit League titles in 14 seasons of competition and ranks third all-time in league victories with 147.
Michigan State returns four of their five starters from last season’s team which made its fifth trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in the last six seasons and its 11th in the last 16 seasons under head coach Tom Izzo. The Spartans finished 27-9 overall and third in the Big Ten with a 13-5 record.
Entering his 19th year as the coach of the Michigan State basketball program, Tom Izzo is 439-178 (.712), and 209-95 (.688) in the Big Ten. He ranks as the winningest coach in Michigan State history, having passed his mentor Jud Heathcote in 2009. In his 18 seasons, Izzo has captured eight National Coach of the Year awards, including the Clair Bee Award in 2005 and NABC honors in 2001 and 2012.
In 1999, Izzo was named National Coach of the year by Basketball Times, while earning similar honors from The Associated Press, Basketball News and the USBWA in 1998. He also earned National Coach of the Year accolades from CBSSports.com in 2012 and Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 1998, 2009 and 2012.
