Four-time GRAMMY nominee Boney James continues his artistic evolution with the dynamic futuresoul. Fusing his love for vintage soul music with his mastery of modern production, Boney has created another genre-bending work following on the heels of his 2014 GRAMMY-nominated album The Beat.
His 15th CD, futuresoul contains 10 original songs produced and written or co-written by James. Released by Concord Records May 4, 2015, futuresoul features vocalist and Mint Condition frontman Stokley on “Either Way,” a collaboration enabled by Twitter. Says James, “Like my recent duet with Raheem DeVaughn, I was able to meet Stokley on Twitter and send him the music for this track. He wrote the brilliant lyric and sent me a finished vocal all via email.”
Since his debut album, Trust, in 1992, James has racked up sales of more than three million records, four RIAA gold albums, four GRAMMY nominations, a Soul Train Award, nominations for two NAACP Image Awards and 10 CD’s atop Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. In 2009 Billboard magazine named him the #3 Contemporary Jazz Artist Of The Decade (trailing just Kenny G and Norah Jones).
Marcus Miller, a two-time GRAMMY Award winner and UNESCO Artist for Peace, is not only an exceptional musician, but also a highly-gifted composer and producer. The legendary Tutu album he wrote and produced for Miles Davis sealed his international fame when Miller was only 25. Since then he has continued collaborating with artists as varied and talented as Eric Clapton, George Benson, Luther Vandross, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Jay-Z, Wayne Shorter, Al Jarreau, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Brian Ferry and Herbie Hancock (to name only a few).
At the same time, he has produced his own albums, among them The Sun Don’t Lie, M2, Silver Rain, Free, A Night in Monte Carlo (with the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra), and Renaissance, giving him occasion to tour internationally with young musicians whose talents he's recognized (as Miles did for him, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and others). His latest album Afrodeezia was released in March 2015 and includes the lead single, “Hylife.”
Marsha Ambrosius knows a little something about writing great songs. Whether it’s as one half of Floetry, on her chart-topping solo debut Late Nights & Early Mornings or her career as an acclaimed songwriter /producer, her observations on love and life paired with her soulful and honest vocals flip the personal into a universal truth.
A native of Liverpool, England, Marsha burst on the music scene as the singing half of Floetry. Following their 2005 sophomore album, Flo’Ology, the duo opted to take different paths and despite the difficulties of ending a long-time partnership, Marsha continued to build a name for herself as a songwriter and producer. Creating “Butterflies” for the late Michael Jackson in 2001, Marsha has also worked with the likes of Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, Busta Rhymes and Nas. She’s been nominated for a total of six Grammys®, honored by BMI as their “Songwriter of the Year” and has a devoted fan base that includes her musical idol Stevie Wonder.
Ambrosius will unleash her next tale of love and life through the release of her sophomore solo album, Friends & Lovers, which features collaborations with Charlie Wilson, Skye and Lindsey Sterling. The 16-track album plays host to a variety of standout records including the hip-hop flavored “Stronger” featuring Dr. Dre, which is a remake of Sade’s “Stronger Than Pride.”
Boney James, Marcus Miller & Marsha Ambrosius at Freedom Hill Amphitheatre is presented by Entertainment Cruise Productions, Michigan Lottery, McLaren Macomb and Ford, and is part of the Fifth Third Bank Concert Series.
